Teatr A Part

Teatr A Part is a visual and physical theatre company, led by director and choreographer Marcin Herich, founded in 2004 in Katowice, Poland. Teatr A Part is a theatre of body, movement, form and visual narration. In the realm of meaning, A Part’s performances reach deep into the human instincts and mysteries of existence, emotions and imponderables.

Teatr A Part has produced 30 performances so far. The productions of A Part, presented on black-box stages, in indoor, outdoor or non-theatrical spaces, at home and abroad, have been shown in 31 countries on 5 continents (Belarus, Brazil, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Mexico, Montenegro, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Spain, Serbia, Slovakia, South Korea, Turkey, Ukraine, USA).

In 2014, the Paris Foundation published a monograph entitled ‘Teatr A Part. 10 Years of Teatr A Part  (2004-2014)’, summarising the Theatre’s achievements to date. At the end of 2024, also published by the Paris Foundation, a second monographic book was published, summarising another 10 years of the Theatre’s activities, entitled ‘Teatr A Part. The second decade (2014-2024)’.

In 2018, Marcin Herich and the Theatre were awarded the Golden Mask, an award given by journalists of the Silesian Region, for its overall artistic achievements.

The venue for the Theatre company’s daily creative work has been the Stage/Atelier of Teatr A Part since 2013, located in an annexe on Katowice’s main street (11a, 3 Maja Street). This historic space once housed the first silent cinema in Katowice, the Grand Kinematograph (1907-1915), while the German cabaret Künstlerspiele  (1940-1944) operated during the Second World War.

The Teatr A Part is the producer and organizer of the International Performing Arts Festival A Part, annual event of experimental and innovative performing arts, held in Katowice since 1994, of which Herich has been the initiator and artistic director since the event’s inception. There have been 31 editions of the festival to date. The next 32th edition is planned for June 2026.

Since 2016, the Theatre has been running the annual Teatr A Part Acting Studio. To date, three editions of the course have been held.

Teatr A Part is represented by a non-governmental organisation called Theatre Association A Part.
